Who each platform is for
Counting raw wins (9 to 5) makes Practice Better look like the clear pick — but it's not. Each dimension matters wildly differently depending on your billing model. A registered dietitian taking Medicare MNT cares more about Healthie's five wins than about most of Practice Better's nine, because if your platform can't submit a clean claim, nothing else matters.
The honest segmentation: cash-pay nutrition, functional medicine, or integrative practices should pick Practice Better. It's cheaper, faster to set up, and its protocol library plus lab integrations are demonstrably deeper. RDs billing in-network insurance — especially Medicare MNT — should pick Healthie. The native claim submission, ERA auto-posting, and Medicare-specific workflows aren't replicated anywhere else in this category.
Where it gets interesting is the hybrid practice — say, an RD who takes some insurance and runs cash-pay group programs on the side. There Healthie's group-program depth and nudge system tip the balance, but it costs you about $40/month extra and a steeper learning curve.
Pricing reality
Both platforms publish misleadingly low starter pricing. The practical reality:
- Practice Better Starter ($29/mo) excludes group programs, superbills, and lab integrations. Most working RDs end up on Professional ($59/mo).
- Healthie Starter ($53/mo) excludes the nudge system, group programs, and most automations. Most working RDs end up on Plus ($99/mo).
At realistic-use pricing the gap is $59 vs $99 — a $480/year delta. Healthie also charges per-claim clearinghouse fees that Practice Better doesn't have an equivalent for (because it doesn't submit claims). If you submit 60+ claims a month the math shifts again, but Healthie typically still costs more.
Worth noting: Healthie's per-seat pricing for multi-practitioner setups scales aggressively. A 3-RD group on Healthie Plus runs ~$240+/mo; the same group on Practice Better Plus is ~$120/mo.
Migration question
If you're already on Practice Better and considering Healthie because you finally got credentialed in-network, the move is justified. Migration takes a weekend; historical notes export cleanly; client records carry over via CSV. We've watched this migration happen at several reader practices and the friction is real but proportionate to the upside.
The reverse migration — Healthie to Practice Better — is rarer and usually triggered by one of two things: a practice dropping insurance entirely, or a frustration with Healthie's onboarding complexity exceeding the value of in-network billing. Don't switch unless you have a specific, concrete reason.
What would change our recommendation
Two things would change this call. First, if Practice Better ever ships native U.S. insurance claim submission — they've teased it for two years — it becomes the default recommendation for almost every RD. Second, if Healthie simplifies onboarding or trims its practical entry tier closer to $79/mo, it would become viable for cash-pay practices that want its group-program depth without paying for billing they don't use. As of June 2026, neither has happened.
